Why Test Motors?
MCA™ Deenergized Testing can assess the health of a motor from the Motor Control Center (MCC) or directly at the motor. This provides immediate info and complete info on the status of the connections, rotor, stator, contamination, and insulation to ground. This is non-destructive deenergized testing.
The electrical part of the three-phase motor system is the three simple RCL circuits (resistive, capacitive, inductive). Each circuit represents one of the three-phase motor system.
ALL-TEST Pro instruments apply non-destructive, low voltage sinusoidal AC signals through the motor windings and measure the response. An entry-level technician can do this test and it can take only a few minutes.
Megohmmeter insulation testing will only detect faults to ground. Only a portion of motor electrical winding failures start as ground faults, some faults go undetected. Large surge testing requires high voltage which can be destructive.
